About OURRS:

OURRS is an after school Athletic Development Mentoring Program developed from a health and wellness perspective that provides overall physical development, and a personal understanding of self to disadvantaged kids while, offering support to their families. This program was developed to be an extension of the overall Athletic Development programs that was offered to the D.C. Public Charter school systems.

This Athletic development/Health and Wellness mentoring program was developed to provide overall development, while simultaneously enhancing its participants athletic abilities. The same program produces benefits of wellness, as a form of therapy, designed to decrease anxiety, decrease aggressive behavior, decrease depression, treat drug addiction, encourage creativity, and relieve stress. We have also modeled it to help the overall development of at-risk parents and at-risk individuals that desired a change in their discipline, work ethic and perception of life. Our method of Athletic development combined with Health/Wellness promotes mental and emotional stability while providing a sense of spiritual awareness to help the participants and their households overcome their inner battles to maintain discipline, develop a work ethic and create a healthy lifestyle.

Our programs are designed to challenge the thought process of the adolescent mind. We utilize pertinent information to help break down and diagnose the effect of the youths past and present experiences of their environment. We believe that it is necessary to take on the perspective, of how the youth currently identifies with their current systematic design of tools and techniques used for survival. We utilize this information to form a new system of techniques and survival tools based upon the comprehension of their surroundings and past experiences of different environments. This program was strategically designed to help build character, provide confidence, boost self-esteem, build discipline, instill a work ethic, boost morale, develop focus and to help provide a understanding of self, while becoming physically fit. This program aims to invoke a system of fitness and Health/Wellness tools to help its participants survive the everyday demands of life and become productive citizens within their communities.

Mission Statement:

Our mission is to provide a safe holistic environment for disadvantaged kids and their families and or participating individuals to become productive citizens in their communities. We strive to provide an atmosphere that inspires growth, instill self-discipline, improve self-awareness, decrease behavioral issues, boost confidence and increase morale to provide a level of structure within the family environment and or surrounding communities.

OURRS will work with at-risk individuals/families to restore and repair family relations/communities as well as create a new perspective of life.  We desire to empower each participant by the use of Athletic development, Health/Wellness, personal mentoring, Life coaching, self-development programs, group forums and support groups.  We believe that it is a must to renovate the generation of today, to be able to restore the generation of tomorrow.

Our Target Audience

Inner city families that do not have the necessary resources and or finances to be able to participate in a program that offers a healthy alternative to traditional mentoring. An Athletic Development mentoring program that’s developed from a health and wellness perspective that offers physical fitness, promote mental and emotional stability while providing a sense of spiritual awareness to help their children and households overcome health issues, learning disabilities, emotional instability, lack of confidence, and aggressive behavior.

DCPS, and DC Public charter schools could benefit from this program as well. Inner-city schools all have somewhat of a traditional approach when it comes to dealing with students that have been diagnosed with learning disabilities, that display emotional and discipline issues. This program could offer another structured environment to work with in addition to the structure of what school is offering.

Group Homes that house children that are currently on house arrest and not allowed to live at home could benefit from this program. This program could help the participants readjust to returning to the streets, their current environments with the same mindset which lead them into incarceration.

The overcrowded Justice system could also benefit from this program, to help decrease repeat offenders for minor crimes. This program could change their overall perspective of life and provide another level of discipline, with a different spin of the Justice system traditional boot camps offer.

Social Services stand to benefit from this program to introduce structure to the family environment as well as to individuals of the surrounding communities that rely upon public assistance programs to help build and instill a level of discipline, a work ethic and a personal value system to help individuals develop into a lifestyle that will allow them to attain and maintain jobs.

Job Corps (Department of labor) mission is to help young people ages 16-24 improve the quality and satisfaction of their lives through vocational and academic training. The issue is that a lot of kids that go the route of job corps. They are inner city youths with an array of mental and emotional issues added with aggressive behavior and a lack of discipline. This almost makes it impossible for them to maintain the proper attitude to engage in a program such as the Job Corps leading to almost an immediate dismissal of youth with no other alternatives.

The Military/ ROTC programs stands to benefit from a program of this magnitude because of the type of physical training and discipline that we can employ within our program which would lead to recruits that are mentally and physically ready to withstand the military boot camp in pursuit of a military career.

Why OURRS:

There is no overall development of self-entities being designed for any one program, if you pay attention to the trend of most programs, that try to tackle inner city issues that usually arise as a result of residing in an at-risk environment for an extended length of time. These programs do not address the overall development of its participants from a perspective of the Mental, Emotional, Spiritual and Physical development. I think that the element of all entities of personal development have allowed us thus far to prove what others cannot, that “we are what we help each other become”.

There are two programs that currently offer something similar but is not designed with the approach of Health and Wellness from a Fitness perspective. These programs are Outward bounds and DC City living in which neither of the two are located within the city limits. Nor do these programs deal with disadvantaged kids with learning disabilities that display an array of emotional and behavioral issues. Our programs are located within the city and have been tested and proven successful in DC Public Charter schools and on an independent measure with no outside funding. OURRS program is also the only program that is documented to work with disadvantaged children while offering support to their immediately family members as well with documented results.

Our Approach of the development of OURRS program. The science to the reason why we combine exercise and Health/Wellness.
